The Golden Visa. What is it?

The Golden Visa Programme launched by the Portuguese Authorities is a fast track for foreign investors from non-EU countries to obtain a fully valid residency permit in Portugal (“Golden Visa”).

How do I know if I need a visa?

Depending on your citizenship and purpose of travel, you should log on to the website of the Consulate General of Portugal http://www.cgj.org.za/ to check whether you are eligible or require a visa.

Can I apply at the Portugal Visa Application Centre if I want to go to Spain or Paris? I can arrange for bookings accordingly?

If you plan to apply for your Schengen visa for Portugal, your main destination and the maximum period of stay in the Schengen States must be in Portugal. Please provide proof to support this information.

Is the visa valid for Portugal only?

The Consulate General of Portugal issues visas for Portugal and for the other Schengen states. The Schengen visa issued by the Consulate General of Portugal gives access to 26 Schengen countries in total. However, Schengen Visa applications will only be accepted by The Portugal Visa Application Centre if Portugal is the country of maximum stay. Should the duration of the stay be the same in several Schengen States, Portugal must be the first point of entry if making an application at the Portugal Visa Application Centre.

How early can I apply?

Applicants are free to apply up to 3 months prior to their date of travel. The Consulate General recommends that you apply well in advance to accommodate any unforeseen processing delays.
